Lindsey Zanardi: Yes 23andMe is a very reputable company. They do mostly health DNA screening so their genealogy portions are are not their strength. Too many of the cousins who have taken the test are not interested in genealogy and know nothing of their family history.Autosomal DNA testing is primarily valuable for use in conjunction with an existing well documented family tree. It can be used to strengthen conclusions and shore up existing weak documentation. A DNA test is not going to prove or disprove that your great great grandmother was from Puerto Rico. Only Family History research will do that....Show more
Bo Perham: DNA is not genealogy ..............Genealogy is researching our ancestry via written records so at the very best 500 years for 99.99%DNA shows ancient ancestry thousands and thousands of years ago..................... and I am sorry but I don't care how legit you think this company is no company will pinpoint 'Scotland' that is just ridiculous,! especially when you say NA...why not a particular tribe? You have invested more than money in this company, you have invested trust, belief and hope so you want it to be correct or it makes you feel foolish and no human likes to feel foolish and you will argue to make sure the 'ideal' in their head is not shattered. If you changed your name/address didn't type in family history information into their website so they don't know what to tell you...then sent in the same DNA you would get back completely different results and if you sent off to 6 other companies again you would get back different results from each of them..............Show more
Lu Tiner: They're a pretty legit company.. Ps. I didn't put too much of my ancestry on their, until after I received my results.
Cuc Gire: How do you know that the company taking your money is providing legit info vs. gerneral info based on your family history that you provided?
Lucien Hellerman: John, yes they are legi! t. However the DNA they have to use is your Autosomal DNA whi! ch is what most of your DNA is. You get it 50-50 from both parents but not necessarily 25% from each of your 4 grandparents as what you inherited can be biased between grandmother and grandfather on both sides of the family. How you inherited any bias will not be how your siblings inherited it. An exception can be if you have an identical twin. Now what they do is match you with population samples in their database. So if you had the same test done by another company your results might be different as they don't all have the same database. One might be deficient in certain population samples the other one isn't and vice versa. It has been reported on this board that there have been people who have had their Autosomal tested for overall ancestry with different companies and they all come up with different results. See Autosomal doesn't go back in a straight line unchanged like Y & Mitochondrial. Now Y & Mitochondrial are more definite but they represent a very tiny part ! of your total ancestry. You get each from only one person in each generation you go back. If you have both done by the time you get back to your 16 great great grandparents, 14 of them will be excluded from the results.Oh with each they can show you the origin of your nomadic ancestors going back thousands of years but it is only in those 2 lines but your family lines double each generation you go back. There has been a lot of hype on some TV shows about the overall ancestral testing with Autosomal and I think it has misled a lot of people. Understand there are no pure races, nationalities, ethnicities etc. So it could be your west Indian ancestry and Trinidadian ancestry is showing up a close match with Puerto Rico. Here is a short video on Autosomal DNA.http://www.smgf.org/education/animations/autosomal......Show more
