Lavelle Viveiros: 1) modern poetry isn't written always written with specific rhyme and rhythm schemes. blank verse. tone poems. this is true of modern poetry and modern music.2) extended metaphor is not new, but compared to antiquity, is a common element of modernity. some poets use broken metaphors... one's that do not make any sense. "it was like an orange nailed to my brow" is the best example i know of.. the poet says he doesn't know why he said that.. had no reasonable poetic purpose, but he still doesn't choose to change it. MAGIC REALISM... gabriel garcia marquez. things that seem impossible in real life but make sense in metaphorical/figurative sense. that is modern3) EASY. what events? world war I and WW2. the cold war. ee cummings. why deviate so much from what was standard before? also, the feminist movement, which elizabeth dickinson was not really part of, but she significantly deviated from standard poetry styles. writing for the sake of wr! iting, not for profit, changed poetry. if you didnt know, dickinson's only submitted poetry was rejected. the only reason we know of her is because of a friend who found her poetry after she died. so, being able to live as a poet off personal income (you were rich or quasi-rich), and not having to write (like mozart, beethoven, homer, etc) in order to please OTHER PEOPLE changed the way poetry evolved....Show more
