George Dingeldein: Our world is full of filthy rude, nasty people who do things like that just for fun to ruin people's day and most of all, to get money from you and to steal passwords so they can access your banking account, etc. Computer viruses started somewhere in the late 70's and early 80's. But they were a lot different back then too. Some of them infected .EXE files so you couldn't access them (viruses still do these days) and others would hack in your computer. Back then the most common way was to dial in your computer and hack in to it and place viruses all over your computer. So, just be careful out there.
