what are the arguments for the long distance transportation of horses for slaughter?

Jules Ashbach: Here are some of the reasons I think long distance transportation to the slaughter house is bad:- No food or water for many days- No stops for the horse to walk around- Too many horses are crammed into a small trailer- Stressful because the horses are being traumatized- The trailer isn't suitable for horses (Example- Not enough ventilation or bedding, broken floorboards, etc, etc)And I really don't agree with horse slaughter... horses are meant to be pets, not food....Show more

Sheree Hipwell: Slaughter is outlawed in the US, so long distance transportation is necessary to get horses from the US to slaughter plants in other countries.

Coy Tapley: Not an issue for the US, it is illegal to operate a slaughter house (but that doesn't mean that some still manage to cross into Mexico and go to one there). Most are shipped inhumane, no matter the length of ride, they cram as many as they get in so to make larger profits per haul.(the ones that do it fo! r a living).

Wilbur Marksberry: -It is outlawed in USA, so horses are put in gigantic stock trailers and shipped 12+ hours across the U.S borders.-Usually they are shipped non-stop, no matter the conditions.-They go without food and water for the majority time when they do make stops for the horses, and they go without it when the people don't stop.-For money-hungry idiots, they pack the horses in the trailers tighter than sardines in a can.-The horses will endure several injuries from being packed in so tightly, and fighting for space.-When they are unloaded, they are so exhausted and dehydrated that they practically fall out of the trailers. These conditions, are of course, not applied to all shipments, because there are some people who actually treat the horses decently the whole entire time. Sometimes beef cattle get treated better than the horses.Add- You can search on YouTube Horse Slaughter Shipping and stuff to get pictures and videos of the different condition! s and such....Show more

Seema Hosfeld: Yeah, it shouldn'! t be done, and especially not the way it is being done! They need to make sure the transport is being done in trailers made for horse transport, that the horses are watered and not downed inside, etc... every 6-8 hours. Here is the deal (used to ride long haul with x-husband). A truck driver is only allowed 8 hours of road driving or 600 miles, whichever comes first, no exceptions. This is often violated. So the laws should be stricter and they NEED to be enforced. CA has a law that states no transport of horses for the use of slaughter, yet they have feed lots... so where is it they think these horses are going?!? It needs to upheld, it's the law that isn't doing it's job!My real opinion: I don't think that any of our horses need to be transported out of the country for slaughter. I think people should have to purchase breeding permits and abide by a breeding standard (a lot of states do this for dogs). I think that everyones worries about horses getting abused or neglecte! d worse is nothing more than hot air. The horses are already here, where's the increase?!? It's an excuse... "well I didn't have the money so I starved it", people starve horses any how and have ever since I was little, a lot of them! "Well it was old and I didn't want to spend the money on a vet... so off to slaughter so I can think happy thoughts" it's the cheap easy way out of an ugly situation. Put a .30 cent bullet between the eyes and call the wildlife refuges (for coyotes, wolves, bears, and prey birds and some zoo's) they would be happy to feed the meat and nothing wasted, plus, you don't have to pay anyone to take the carcass, they pick them up for free. There are so many other ways to deal with this, slaughter is NOT the answer, and transportation for slaughter in another country is definitely NOT the answer.
