Why do some people say about how some cars are plastic? What are they referring to? What are cars made out?

Randa Hessell: A lot of the skin parts will be made of plastic. I.e. bumpers and skirts. Generally not the hood, trunk, and door skins. There's a lot of other plastic parts in some cars, I've seen plastic based motor mounts in cheap cars...Cars aren't made of "fiberglass" just panels for sports cars (like a corvette). Marjory Stromme: ! Parts of most modern cars are made out of plastic- mainly the shell of the car. This is because plastic is light weight (so reduces fuel consumption) and crumples better than steel in a crash.

Justin Casten: There are some parts on some cars that are made of plastic or fiberglass (such as the bumpers) because they are more dent-resistant. Some car companies are switching to the entire body being made of these materials just because they are.

Faviola Dewire: There are actually composite plastic parts on the vehicles nowadays; items like: bumper covers, dash boards, steering wheels, hub caps, etc, etc. The only real metal parts are the drivetrain, wheels, and most body panels
