Ronnie Panas: In order to get a general discharge you had to have done something pretty bad. Government agencies will know this and probably hold it against you If the government job requires a background check it will be held against you, to what extent who knows? I have a government job you wouldn't get hired here, you wouldn't even be considered. One of you "not so important" benefits is Vet preference. That is huge when it comes to getting a government job. With out those vet benefits you probably won't even considered. Most applications will be run through a computer, with out having vet preference you probably won't make it through the first step of being considered....Show more
Brice Greczkowski: It depends on the conditions of your discharge. There is no flat General Discharge. There are conditions that go with it. I.E General under Honorable Conditions, General under Medical Conditions ect. Its not that you disqualify for Government positions, but if! there is someone with the same qualifications as you have, but have an honorable discharge, they will take precedence over you. Its not true that you lose all military benefits or veteran benefits--I was discharged with an Admin Sep under Honorable conditions, and I still go to a VA hospital and was recently granted a 10% disability rating from the VA. That 10% is going to pay for Vocational Rehabilitation..I.E. 4 years of college. And I get paid from the VA. I lost my chance of getting the GI Bill because you need to put in at least 3 years of service to get it. I was only in for 1 year. But I got the Voc Rehab which is comparable. Talk to a Veteran Service Rep. They will be able to answer your questions to a fuller and more accurate extent. Good Luck....Show more

Antwan Schrum: I have a general under honorable conditions for misconduct and I was selected with veterans prefrence! I am going through the federal hiring process and completed fin! gerprinting and physical. I was discharged in 2009 and have ha! d the same civilian job since my discharge in 2009!!
Sharri Scalley: Judging by the fact that states hire past criminals, I don't think a general discharge will kill your chances, just make you have to explain it.
Becky Mosena: It all depends why yuo got the general discharge dude. Even if you pissed hot and got a general under honorable you can work some jobs, including cops, but id wait a while after you get out before applying. Itll lower your chances ill tell you that. And I got a general D and I get all the veterans benefits, i get most of my Gi bill, I get free healthcare from the VA hospital, all kinds of stuff dude, ACAP services can help with finding a job too....Show more
