Can Lymes Disease cause sickle cell anemia?

Rose Krouse: Lymes disease and sickle cell are 2 different diseases! And Lymes does not cause sickle...Period!

Torri Tippey: Sickle anemia is caused by a point mutation in the allele that produces the beta chain of hemoglobin. As a result, the wrong amino acid (valine is substiituted for glutamic acid) is inserted into the polypeptide. In gene therapy, it will be necessary to develop a virus that can deliver the correct allele to the bone marrow cells so they can produce the correct form of the beta chain.

Ileen Oshell: I do understand that they are two different diseases. I HAVE HAD lymes disease and babesia and was wondering if any other anemic disorders/diseases could happen because of that.

Bernadette Roel: one is a genetic disorder (sickle cell anemia that largely effects African Americans)the other is spread by deer ticks and named after Lyme Connecticut where it was first discovered (Incidentally there is a very tiny probability of finding African! Americans in that area)
